The Romance Novel As A Medium For Advocacy

.
I am especially proud of my Hawlang Apoy (Cage of Fire) series.

Published by WEDPRO, Inc. - a Philippine non-government organization of and for women - and funded by the Ford Foundation in 2002, it is the only Filipino romance novel series so far which uses the genre as a medium to disseminate information on sensitive women's issues.

Book 1: Pick Up, Take Out o Delivery? deals with the plight of women in prostitution.

Book 2: Bride For Sale discusses mail order bride syndicates.

Book 3: For Export tackles trafficking of women and white slavery.

The Hawlang Apoy series proves that the romance novel is a powerful medium that should not be underestimated. It can provide both entertainment and knowledge on significant areas of human concern. Its power lies in its very personal emotional impact on readers.

As the saying goes: the pen can be mightier than the sword. It may be very difficult to fight widespread abuse against women but at least we can use every venue possible to arm women and concerned men with information and knowledge that they can use against such abuses.
